Pages: 69-86

PDF Full Text
Abstract

Castor Oil is a natural raw material, used to prepare Brominated Castor Oil (BCO) and quaternary ammonium salt based castor oil (TEt-CO). The two products were tested as demulsifiers and compared with a commercial demulsifier (Chimec2439) by using bottle test method. BCO showed a high ability on water separation efficiency 90% with a dose of 150µl at 120min time settling while TEt- CO showed a low water separation efficiency reached to 10%. The effect of the demulsifier BCO was tested by varying different variables which have an obvious effect on water separation efficiency such as: dose, temperature, time of mixing emulsion, pH and salinity of aqueous phase of emulsion, and water ratio. The effect of some additives (i.e. methanol, ethanol, xylene and toluene) on the efficiency of the BCO was tested for the purpose of enhancing its effectiveness to break the crude oil emulsion. The experimental data obtained by using BCO were formulated as a model using the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to evaluating the water separation efficiency. Multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network was developed based on the collected data of this study. The results showed that the training algorithm of back propagation (BP) is sufficient enough in predicting BCO efficiency under different operation conditions. It was found that the correlation coefficient values are 0.9995 and 0.9999 for the testing and training data, respectively and the mean square error (MSE) was 6.18*10^-5 at 200 epochs.

Abstract

4-Stearoylresorcinol was prepared by acylation of resorcinol with stearoyl chloride in the presence of zinc chloride as catalyst in a batch reactor. The temperature range of reaction was (50-80)°C. The rate of acylation increased with temperature up to (70°C). The conversion of reactants appeared to follow second order kinetic model. The reaction rate constant was (0.0031 1/mol.min) and was higher at higher temperatures. Activation energy was (16.8258 kJ/mol). The optimal catalyst concentration was (2.9936 mol/l). Also, a quantitative relationship was derived to represent the weight of the product as a function to the reaction variables. The quantitative relationship gave mean deviation equal to (5%). The product concentration was measured by UV spectroscopy.

Pages: 7-11

PDF Full Text
Abstract

Constructed wetlands are engineered systems used for wastewater treatment with the objective of reusing water under controlled conditions by mimicking natural treatment mechanisms involving porous media, plants, and microbial communities. This study investigates the performance of a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland, where wastewater flows through a gravel bed and vegetation roots, allowing contact with biofilm developed within the wetland substrate. To evaluate treated water quality, physical, chemical, and biological parameters were measured. Field results demonstrated that pollutant removal efficiency increased with detention time. After 3, 4, and 6 days of treatment, average removal efficiencies were 47.7%, 53.2%, and 77.5% for COD; 45.1%, 52.8%, and 64.4% for total nitrogen (TN); and 55.4%, 58.8%, and 72.2% for ammonium (NH₄), respectively. Nitrate removal averaged 19.41% after 3 days. These findings confirm that the horizontal flow constructed wetland system is effective in reducing key wastewater pollutants.

Abstract

Basrah is considered as the economic capital of Iraq. In recent years, it showed a rapid growth in population and, accordingly, an increasing investment in construction industries. This paper presents information about the geotechnical characteristics of Basrah soil. For this purpose, geotechnical data have been collected covering wide areas of the city. The study area was divided into two zones, one of them was further divided into three subzones. For each of the zones considered, geotechnical information including typical soil profiles, Standard Penetration Test (SPT-N) values, Atterberg limits, sieve analysis results, consolidation test results and other physical aspects were given. Furthermore, chemical analysis of Basrah soil was also presented. According to field and laboratory results, soils in this region can be classified into two distinct zones. The eastern zone, which mainly forms of soft and medium cohesion soils extended from the soil surface down to a depth of (16 – 26) m, and, the western zone, which can be identified by the sandy surficial and stratigraphic soil.

Pages: 67-78

PDF Full Text
Abstract

This study is focused on the assessment of the effects of Sulphur percentage in submerged arc welded API 5L X60 steel under conditions simulated to crude oil environments on its mechanical properties and microstructure. This involved immersing welded specimens in distilled water containing high (0.3250 ml/4L distilled water) and low (0.25 ml/4L distilled water) Sulphur concentrations for four weeks, while unimmersed samples were used as controls for comparison between the two groups of samples. The related experiments were tensile test, hardness measurements, SEM and EDS analyses and XRD analysis. The most mechanically degraded was the high- Sulphur group (H-group); yield strength of 441 MPa (17% loss) and ultimate tensile strength of 506 MPa (11% loss). For the low-sulfur group (L-group), reductions were more moderate: 467 MPa and 523 MPa, respectively. Weld metal (WM) and HAZ hardness values in the H-group were 203 HB and 208 HB, respectively, while those of the L-group were 208 HB and 214 HB. The H-group created a non-protective mixed layer of acicular iron oxides and iron sulfides (FeS) with respect to the microstructural aspects, whereas the L-group developed a thin protective film of iron oxide free from sulfides. Welding parameters were investigated for their effect on the corrosion rate and mechanical properties.

Abstract

Higher education institutions, as one of the powerful actors contributing to pollution and impact on the environment, are not an exception in adoption of sustainable practices. Thus, this study aims to investigate the sewage disposal condition at University of Basrah situated adjacent to the Shatt al-Arab, which is estimated as the artery that feeds water to Basra/southern Iraq regions. The release of non-treated or poorly treated water is a real danger to the aquatic and terrestrial species in Governorate. Consequently, samples were collected for analysis during summer and winter seasons to investigate their physical, chemical and biological characteristics acknowledged as basic criteria for assessment of environmental degradation: DO, TDS, NO3, NO2, PO4, SO4 pH. Also, measured are BOD and COD. Preliminary studies suggest that wastewater properties differ with its origin and associated practices. These differences emphasize the need for targeted management strategies depending on the origin of wastewater. In order to be able to decide whether the treatment of wastewater and measures for environmental protection are appropriate, this study provides valuable information on the nature of wastewater generated in University of Basrah, College of Engineering. The findings help decision makers in the field of wastewater management for implementing the exact strategies of sustainable sewage treatment and disposal legislations, which consequently saving water resources.

Pages: 38-42

PDF Full Text
Abstract

The surge tank is one of important control devices in reducing water Hummer effect on distributed network piping system and hydropower stations. An experimental study was conducted into a simple surge tank of 0.044 m in a diameter with upstream constant head reservoir of a height, 0.881 m and a water transporting pipe of a size 0.0202 m. Results indicate that rapid closure of a downstream valve causes under-damped stable oscillation in a surge tank. Experimental response agreed well with theoretical results when friction factor is considered to be variable, but with 85 % increases in settle time and more oscillations when constant friction factor is recognized at initial value before valve closure. Doubling surge tank area does not improve the dynamics properties; otherwise, Thoma area must be avoided for small sizes. Comsol multiphysics software 3.5 is used to deal with the dynamics of the surge tank numerically.

Abstract

Failures in the steam tubes of boiler furnaces in Najebia power plant was studied experimentally. Visual examination, mechanical tests, microscopic test and chemical analyses were performed. Visual examination showed the types of failure in the tubes. Tensile and hardness tests were performed to estimate the variation in the mechanical properties of the tubes metal and compared with the new tubes. Microscopic test for the failed tubes used to recognize the difference in the microstructure to the metal of the tubes. Chemical analyses involved chemical composition of the tubes metal, river and feed water analyses, water treatment, fuel analyses and analysis of deposits and oxides on the external and internal sides. Overheating and wall thinning of the tubes resulted from oxygen escaping to the inner side of these tubes, and presence of deposits and oxides on the external and internal sides which led to failure was studied extensively. Engineering remedies were also given to confine the problem and to prevent it in future.

Nathera A. Saleh, Zainab Asaad Hardan

Pages: 26-39

Abstract

This study investigates the vibration behavior of cantilever beams with bolted joints of different lap types (single lap and double lap) under free and forced vibration conditions. The effects of various parameters, including beam configuration, bolt preload, harmonic force magnitude, and force application position, on natural frequency, mode shape, and vibration amplitude are analyzed. Experimental work involved material selection, chemical composition testing, tension tests, beam preparation, and free and forced vibration tests with pre-torque ranging from 6 to 60 N·m and rotational speeds between 300 and 900 RPM. Numerical simulations were performed using the general-purpose finite element software ANSYS 16.1. Results indicate that the natural frequencies of single-lap bolted beams (1 or 2 bolts) are approximately equal to those of intact beams, while double-lap bolted beams exhibit slightly lower natural frequencies than intact beams with the same profile. Increasing bolt preload stabilizes the natural frequency for all beam configurations. For forced vibrations, the amplitude is strongly influenced by the magnitude and position of the applied harmonic force. Validation with experimental results shows good agreement, with a maximum error of approximately 5%.

Pages: 9-17

PDF Full Text
Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the influence of heat treatment and surface finish on the behavior of crevice corrosion resistance of AISI 410 and 416 martensitic stainless steels thus, to quantify the conditions at which crevice corrosion minimize as possible. The experimental work carried out during this study involves material selection, chemical composition tests, specimens preparation before heat treatments, austenitizing at temperature range (925-1010˚C) and for holding time periods of (30, 45 and 90 min), air and oil quenching followed by tempering at heating range of (205- 605 ̊C) and for 45 min, micro hardness tests, specimens grinding, surface roughness measurements, crevice corrosion tests, crevice evaluation and microstructure tests. Theoretically, empirical equations for crevice maximum depth under the effect of surface roughness and hardness for both AISI 410 and 416 steels were determined. While for microstructure analysis, carbides average area was determined by using the ImageJ analysis program and a mathematical model was also predicted. Results showed that, as hardness and surface roughness increase crevice corrosion resistance decreases. Therefore, material treated by annealing can minimize crevice corrosion rates more than that treated with hardening.

Improvement of Gasoline Octane Number Produced from Basrah Refinery Plant by New Additives

A. Z. Raheem, M. M. Alfalze, H. A. Mehdi

Pages: 60-76

PDF Full Text
Abstract

Basrah Refinery Plant produces recently gasoline with low octane number reached to 75.5, 69.0 for leaded and unleaded gasoline respectively. These fuel causes severe damage to engines and also causes bad fuel combustion which increases air pollution due to the high percentage of [CO] and [CO2] in the exhaust produced. In this research it is tried to improve the gasoline octane number by new chemical additives [aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic and aromatic amines] with different percentages in gasoline. This kinds of additives can also be used as antioxidants, antirust and anticorrosion which reduces the total amount of chemicals added to gasoline. The better results obtained with aromatic amines as chemical additives which caused increasing in octane number up to [95-5, 88..0] for leaded and unleaded gasoline respectively. The percentages of [CO] and [CO2] gases formed after combustion are measured by orsat analysis based on dry analyses.

Abstract

Water pollution is the most important tasks facing all countries in the world to obtain suitable water for municipal, industrial, and agricultural uses. This study concerns with the effect of Bagdad city waste water on pollution and quality of Tigris River water using index of Aquifer water quality (IAWQ). The accuracy of chemical analyses of the selected water samples are conduced according to world standards of health classifications. Results of these analysis show that only two types of the 13th tested sample are ( certain ) ,while the other patterns ( models )are of the ( probable certain ). Cluster analysis is applied to evaluate the studied water characteristic. The results of the cluster analysis show the presence of three varying groups in their impact on their chemical properties on water .According to the cluster analysis and permissible limits of the variables, three chemical variables cadmium, lead, and calcium are selected to indicate its impact on the studied area. It is found that when using (IAWG) for the Tigris River, there is an increase in the values of the index along the river from its entry to Baghdad until it meets the Diyala river, showing a clear pollution of the Tigris river water.

Abstract

The present work aims to study the performance of reverse osmosis process at Al-Dura power station. The selected membrane which is used in this work is made from polyamide (thin film composite membrane (TFC)) constructed as spiral wound module. The basic advantages of this type of membrane are the higher productivity compared with the total volume of the module, and stability of the polymer towards the chernical effect. It was found that recovery percentage (or product rate), rejection percentage (or solute concentration in product), and concentration factor decreases with increasing operating time for reverse osmosis unit, whereas, the operating pressure for reverse osmosis unit increase with time. Maximum salt rejection percentage and Maximum recovery percentage were determined to be 96% and 75% respectively for polyamide membrane.

Abstract

In this paper, Weibull uni-axial and multi-axial distribution function is applied to evaluate the reliability of the fracture strength of rotating turbine rotor wheel manufactured from ceramic material and have inner surface crack. Three cases are considered, first taking only the effect of rotational stresses, second taking the effect of rotational and thermal stresses in ceramic disc, and third taking the effect of rotational and thermal loading in ceramic blade. It was found that there is a convergence between results gotten from uni-axial and multi-axial distribution function, but multi-axial distribution function give small large in values result compared to uni-axial distribution function. The expected values of rupture strength of ceramic blade is higher than of that of disc material, therefore the failure occurs in blade first than in disc material in service survival.

The objectives of this study are to determine the chemical, physical and Biochemical characteristics of raw domestic sewage for Basrah city. Results show that; the strength of Basrah raw domestic sewage can be classified as a strong strength concentration wastewater due to high levels of organic loading rate BOD5 , COD. Also, it can be seen a very high concentrations of TDS , CL- and increasing in EC levels above the typical limits due to the salinity of domestic water supply in Basrah. High concentrations of oil and grease were found as result of misuse of the sewerage system. While the values of pH, temperature, nutrients and the number of FC are within the typical acceptable limits.

Abstract

Shatt Al-Arab river has been used as the raw material for the drinking water, irrigation and fish purposes in Basrah city. Concurrently, this river has been polluted by domestic, farming and industrial waste. Three main factories lie on the bank of Shatt Al-Arab river: Al-Hartha Paper Mill, Hartha Power Station and Al-Najibia Power Plant. All these consume water from the river and return their wastewater back to it. The aim of this study is to assess the water quality of Shatt Al-Arab river and its suitability for drinking, irrigation and aquatic life through physicochemical analysis temperature, pH, EC, Total Dissolve Solid (TDS), Cl − , Na + , K + , Ca +2 , Mg+2, HCO 3 total hardness, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). BOD5 concentration near factories showed polluted water, unsafe and requiring costly treatment to use for drinking water. Sodium concentration is a key factor for irrigation, which represent by SAR and SSP. As SSP exceed 75.73 % in water near these factories, this could breakdown soil structure and can damage agriculture area. The high concentrations of BOD5 and COD could pose a threat to aquatic life and fishes. As Shatt Al-Arab river is used for different purpose, the result in this study showed polluted water near industrial areas. Therefore, it is recommended to have regular data on water quality for this river near these areas.

Abstract

In this paper, the Weibull uni-axial and multi-axial distribution function for polyethylene pips under pressure loading were developed and analyzed taking account of residual stress. Tensile test was achieved to determine mechanical properties and the Weibull parameters. Experimental method using the hole- drilling strain-gage method was used to measure the residual stresses in PE pipe and compare with that obtained from numerical finite element method (FEM). The obtained results show that there is a convergence between uni-axial and multi-axial distribution function, but multi-axial distribution function give large values compared to uni-axial distribution function. It was observed that the residual stresses have influence on failure assessment diagram and causes translation from elastic-plastic failure to brittle failure.

Abstract

In this research, the effect of seawater environments and surface roughness on uniform corrosion rate of carbon steel (A516 grade 65) was studied depending on the experimental work and artificial neural network modeling. The experimental work involves chemical composition, samples machining, roughness measurements (for carbon steel specimens), conductivity and salinity measurements (for seawater), and uniform corrosion test. Weight loss technique was employed in determining the uniform corrosion rate in carbon steel material. Also, artificial neural network (ANN) model was built to predict the values of uniform corrosion rate (mpy) at different values of conductivity, salinity for seawater and roughness factor for carbon steel depending on the experimental results which were used train and test the ANN. The results obtained of uniform corrosion rate by ANN predictions are shown to be agreed well against experimental values. i.e. correlation coefficient, R=0.9974

Abstract

In the operating of TEG- dehydration unit in Central Rumaila Compression Station. Two operating parameters determine the efficient operating of the unit, the desired dew point depression and the losses of TEG. This work presents an attempt to study the effect of all the operating variables on the efficiency of the dehydration unit such as: the effect of pressure and temperature of the natural gas has to be treated on the water content. Contactor pressure, TEG circulating rate and stripping gas flow rate are also considered in this study. The results showed that decreasing the temperature of the absorber from 130 F to 120 F will reduce the mass fraction of water in the dry gas stream from 0.000076 to 0.00002. Increasing the absorber pressure from 549.7 psia (design pressure) to 600 psia will also reduce the water content in the outlet dry gas from 0.000076 to 0.000022 as mass fraction. The simulation result shows linear relation between the wet gas flow rate from the regeneration column and the lean glycol flow rate.
