Go to Editorial ManagerA large number of RC structures or at least some of their members need strengthening or rehabilitation. Among the typical failure modes, the shear failure is more dangerous and less predictable, because of usually brittle behavior and sudden collapse. Therefore, there are necessities for upgrading the shear capacity and the local ductility of reinforced concrete beams. In this study, four different techniques of concrete jacketing were used to improve the behaviors of the shear deficiencies beams. The four techniques used in this study to enhance the behavior of the beams were by using a Self-Compacted Fiber Reinforced Concrete jacket without stirrups (S.-J. + Steel Fiber), a concrete jacket of Self Compacted Concrete with stirrups (S.-J. + Stirrups), a concrete jacket of ferrocement jacket (S.-J. + Ferrocement), and a concrete jacket of ferrocement jacket with external steel reinforcing bars (S.-J. + Ferrocement + R). These techniques contributed to enhancing the load-carrying capacity and delaying the appearance of the first crack in tested beams compared with the control beam by a percentage of (35, 59, 30, 6) % and (18, 35, 81, 80) %, respectively. The specimen (S.-J. + Stirrups) showed the best performance in comparison with the other used strengthening techniques used in this study in terms of stiffness and the ultimate load-carrying capacity. The ferrocement jacket (S.-J. + Ferrocement) was found to be the most suitable jacketing system used to enhance the shear capacity in terms of cracking load.
This study uses intelligent techniques to regulate brushless direct current speed (BLDC) motors. After these motors solved the problem of using brushes and commutators in traditional DC motors, they succeeded in replacing brushes and commutators with electronic commutators. Due to the use of electronic switching, brushless motor algorithms are more complex than those of conventional motors. In this study, to adjust the PID controller's settings (Kp, Ki, and Kd), a trial-and-error approach was taken, and a completely new method known as the settings of known PID controllers have been modified using the new Gray Wolf algorithm. A BLDC motor's main benefit is that it has easy speed adjustment across a broad range, whereas AC motors often cannot be controlled in this way. Through the use of Matlab/Simulink, the BLDC motor's mathematical model was developed and implemented. The simulation results show that in the first case, a PID controller effectively induces the turbulent dynamic behavior of BLDC under load and no-load conditions, and in the second case, the speed shows the lowest rise time, stability, overshoot, and stability conditions, and performs at its best. The characteristics of the traditional PID controller that regulates the engine speed must be regulated online to achieve the use of intelligent technologies, and the adjustment is done online using the neural network. The results showed that this technology, or feature - online tuning - is the most effective and reliable of all.
Image segmentation is the process of automatically dividing an image into distinct, meaningful, and non-overlapping regions. The quality of the segmentation process determines the efficiency of other image processing tasks. Analyzing microstructural images is crucial since the mechanical properties are strongly dependent on the microstructural phases’ statistics. These images are considered one of the most difficult and challenging images to deal with due to their special characteristics, such as the convergence in pixels intensity values, overlapping in colors, boundaries and textures in phase regions, infinite shapes of grains and colonies, etc. As there is no generic technique suitable to be used with all microstructures, this work reviews techniques that have been effectively used and recommended to be employed in metallurgical research, with a brief description of their principles, advantages, and disadvantages, and discusses their applicability. The major aim of this work is to spare time and effort searching for and experimenting with all the available methods for future researchers.
In this work, a portable vibration analysis and diagnosis system is designed and constructed. The system is capable of doing most of the known analysis techniques such as FFT, time waveform, cepstrum analysis, dual channel analysis, orbit, envelope detection and other techniques. Furthermore, a new fast and efficient tracking analysis algorithm, suitable for portable instruments, has been proposed. This technique provides the data required to get accurate Bode and Nyquist plots for diagnostic analysis during machine run-up and coast-down tests. Moreover, FFT waterfall and spectrogram techniques have been included. Also, single-plane and dual-plane field balancing have been implemented in this system to execute field balancing tasks.
Among the soft-switching techniques, the Zero-Current Zero-Voltage Transition (ZCZVT) technique is used in this paper. It is based on the Resonant Transition Mechanism requirements, which permit newcomers to perceive the Resonant Transition techniques as a whole instead of dissimilar soft-switching techniques. The open loop operation of the power circuit (DC/DC Boost Converter) and control circuit have been implemented and tested with MatLab software. The simulation test facility and the analytical development tools being used are described. The derivation of closed loop control strategy based on fuzzy logic control with nonlinear fuzzy sets for input and output variables is described in detail. The closed loop simulation results that describe the performance of the proposed converter with this control strategy due to different effects are also included.
An intelligent and anticipatory speed controller for internal combustion engines was designed theoretically and examined experimentally. This design was based on the addition of a torque loop to the main speed loop. The model can sense the external load with the help of a load cell and send this signal to a soft computing unit for analysis and processing. This scheme will improve the ability of anticipation of controller since it treats the factors that affect the speed, not the speed itself. The experimental design was implemented using two types of actuating techniques; an intelligent throttling actuator and an intelligent injection actuator. The signal was analyzed by using intelligent techniques such as fuzzy logic, neural network and genetic algorithm. The experimental data were used to train the neural and the Adaptive Neuro–Fuzzy Inference System. The comparison of the results obtained in this work with other available models proved the efficiency and the robustness of the present model.
Solar power systems, also known as photovoltaic (PV) systems, are widely used as a clean and sustainable energy source worldwide. However, these systems can be affected by various factors that contribute to dust accumulation, which have been grouped into five categories: module characteristics, environmental factors, climatic conditions, exposure situations, and soiling properties. Dust accumulation can significantly impact photovoltaic modules' efficiency and power output, leading to a decrease in electricity generation. Airborne dust reduces the intensity of solar radiation by scattering and absorbing it, especially in hot and dry regions such as southern Iraq. This study provides an updated overview of the process of dust accumulation on photovoltaic modules south of Iraq. Moreover, it illustrates the methods used to measure dust accumulation and the performance of solar PV under soiling. Furthermore, it exemplifies the sources of the soiling generation. Additionally, it demonstrates the composition and size of dust particles. Finally, future research perspectives are discussed, and a thorough investigation of the impact of dust is suggested in all regions of Iraq and even in all countries of the world, especially those interested in clean energy. This research aims to understand the effect of dust soiling on PV performance. The outcome of this research will help design the PV module system while considering the most effective method to reduce or prevent dust accumulation in specific areas.
This study presents a modified approach for analyzing torsional vibrations in rotor systems using an enhanced Holzer method integrated with MATLAB-based techniques through the development of a graphical user interface (GUI). The primary objective is to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach and GUI in evaluating torsional vibration behavior in well-known rotor configurations, including two-, three-, and five-rotor systems. Classic torsional vibration problems were examined using the developed tools, and the results verified the accuracy and practicality of the method. The findings indicate that the modified approach and MATLAB GUI provide efficient, reliable, and user-friendly solutions for engineers, designers, and vibration analysts in studying and addressing torsional vibration issues in rotor systems.
Previous concrete is a special, highly porous concrete used in applications that allow water to pass through it, such as parking areas and park walkways. In this research, three pervious concrete mixes were designed and produced by fixing all amounts of their raw materials (cement, water and gravel) but changing the gravel particle sizes as (4.75-10 mm), (10-14 mm) and (14-20 mm). by adopting 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional techniques, porosity (pore volume), compressive strength and permeability of the selected mixes were investigated. The results showed that the volumetric pore volume (3D porosity) of pervious concrete can be predicted by adopting the Image analysis technique (2D method). In addition, using smaller-sized aggregate (4.75-10 mm) helped in enhancing the pore structure, compressive strength (30% more) and permeability (80% less) of pervious concrete than using the bigger-sized aggregate (14-20 mm). Finally, it was found that the best-fitting line for both 2D and 3D porosities and permeability was an exponential model.
Different modulation techniques of Nine-Level Inverter (NLI) for an Open-End Winding Induction Motor (OEWIM) is presented in this paper. The two five-level inverters are fed by both ends of open-winding induction motor. The five-level inverters are connected by cascading of four two-level inverters. This inverter topology does not neutral-point fluctuation so this topology different from neutral-point clamping inverter and this scheme does not the diode clamping to fixed neutral point. In the different multilevel sinusoidal pulse width modulations used for the proposed topology. The drive is implemented and simulation with an open-end winding induction motor and simulation results are presented.
Traditional Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers continue to produce effective performance in controlling DC motors. Nowadays, advancements in optimization techniques are improving control performance. These techniques minimize fluctuations and accelerate convergence. In this study, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm was applied using the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) objective function. The PSO used to tune PID parameters in MATLAB/Simulink. The resulting PSO-PID performance was compared with that of a conventional PID controller. The findings indicate that the PSO-PID approach reduces peak overshoot errors from 2.1% to 0.5%. Moreover, the PSO-PID substantially decreases the settling time. Despite adding GA, PSO-PID already shows excellent results (0.93 s settling time, compared with 1.85 s in GA and 1.15 s in classical PID). These improvements contribute to smoother actuator voltage. It can also reduce mechanical and electrical issues and enhance long-term system reliability.
Interest in neural networks as an alternative to the conventional algorithmic techniques has grown rapidly in recent years. Noise removal or noise suppression is an important task in image processing. In general, the results of the noise removal have a strong influence on the quality of the following image processing techniques. In this paper, two feed forward NN schemes have been presented for impulsive noise removal. The computation is reduced by using an artificial image in training. Results of NN schemes show high performance especially when the ratio of impulsive noise in testing are the same or greater than that of training image. The presented schemes are used for grayscale and also for truecolor.
In this study, a new approach for the torsional vibration analysis of rotor systems using Holzer and Matlab techniques, by developing a graphical user interface (GUI), has been introduced. The objective of the work is to show the usefulness and power of Matlab GUI in investigating and analyzing the effects of torsional vibration on rotor systems. Also to carry out an analysis using the developed GUI to simulate three different rotor configurations such as 2-Rotor, 3-Rotor, and 5-Rotor systems. Illustrated problems in the field of analysis of torsional vibration are carried out. The results show that the developed GUI is very useful for engineers, designers, and analysts of torsional vibration problems in rotor systems.
Exceptionally strong press-hardened steels (PHS) are significantly demanded in the automobile industry for satisfying the carbon neutrality criterion. Recent research attempts to produce advanced-ultrahigh-strength medium steels have resulted in a variety of alloying approaches, thermomechanical processing techniques, and microstructural modifications for these steel grades. It has been shown that adding microalloying components to standard Mn-B steels can refine the microstructure of PHS which leads to better mechanical properties such as hydrogen embrittlement resistance and other performance indicators for service. In this paper a general review about the effect of microstructure test on the mechanical behavior of Press Hardening Steel (PHS) where microstructure approaches have also demonstrated good potential for the mechanical characteristics of PHS steel, in line with need for new evaluation and discovery meantime, statistical data of the microstructural phases heavily influence the mechanical properties, microstructural image analysis is essential. The purpose of this paper is to know how the microstructure phases will effect on the strength and hardness of press hardening steel also the alloying elements adding impact on the microstructure formulation and mechanical features of PHS.
Advanced applications, such as aircraft manufacturing, require sophisticated materials. Composite materials are among these advanced materials and offer several advantages, including high strength and low weight. Given that these applications experience repeated loading, studying fatigue in composite materials is essential. This paper provides a comprehensive review of fatigue failure in composite materials, focusing on the types of fatigue loads, the characteristics of composite materials, and the damage mechanisms. Additionally, we discuss modelling and simulation techniques to understand fatigue behavior and the standards necessary for conducting fatigue failure testing in composite materials. The study of fatigue in composite materials is diverse, reflecting the materials' complexity, which varies across scales. Due to composite materials' heterogeneity, numerical modelling can be challenging. It often requires numerous constants that change with various factors, which can only be determined through experimental test. As a result, studying fatigue in composite materials can be costly.
The welding process involves a very complex thermal cycle, resulting in irreversible elastic-plastic deformation, and residual stresses in and around fusion zone and heat-affected zone (HAZ). A residual stress due to welding arises from the differential heating of the pipes due to the weld heat source. However, the presence of residual stresses in and around the weld zone reduces the strength and life of the component. The objective of this work is to measure the welding residual stress in ASTM (A-106 Gr. b) steel pipes with 4" diameter and 6 mm thickness welded manually (SMAW) in a three-pass butt joint. The shielded metal arc welding process consists of heating, melting, and solidification of parent metals and a filler material in a localized fusion zone by a transient heat source to form a joint between the parent metals. The welding process was carried out without preheating and heat treatment. This measurement of residual stress occurs by using the hole-drilling strain gauge method according to (ASTM E-873), and the experimental results for residual stresses obtained from welded carbon steel pipes are used to provide validation for finite element simulations. The welding process and welding residual stress distribution is calculated by Ansys Finite Element techniques. Theoretical considerations can be assessed by a mechanical model. Overall, there is good agreement between the predicted and measured distributions of residual stress, but the magnitude of predicted stress tends to be greater in the welding region.
The present study deals with the analysis of short reinforced concrete columns subjected to axial load. One of the efficient techniques is applied, known as artificial neural networks. The descent gradient backpropagation algorithm is employed for analysis. The optimum topology (which gives the least mean square error for both training and testing with a fewer number of epochs) is presented. The effects of the number of nodes in input and hidden layer(s), and selecting of leaming rate and momentum coefficient, on the behavior of the neural network, have been investigated. Due to the slow convergence of results when using descent gradient backpropagation, the faster algorithm called "resilient backpropagation algorithm" has been used to improve the performance of the neural network and the results have been compared with those obtained using the descent gradient backpropagation algorithm.
The electronic equipment industry has developed rapidly in recent years. The amount of heat emitted from such equipment is seriously increased. Increasing the temperature of the electronic devices degrades their performance and as a final result their failure. Therefore, the requirements for an effective cooling system have become more important than ever. One of the most important methods of heat dissipation that the researchers focused on is the use of piezoelectric fans (PE). The current study reviews most of the developments that have taken place since its discovery nearly 40 years ago and focused on reducing power consumption. Most of the improvements and developments have been focused on obtaining optimal designs for these piezoelectric fans, which are used in different applications. This review clarifies the foundations and concepts of designing piezoelectric fans by comparing the data presented in previous studies. Furthermore, in the last ten years, numerical simulation has entered as an effective tool in predicting the optimal design of piezoelectric fans. The design of piezoelectric fans is in two forms, either single or multiple. The single fan system is used within a limited range of applications, as large cooling systems cannot be replaced by it. Therefore, the cooling system consisting of multiple piezoelectric fans is promising as a unique solution to effectively dissipate heat in electronic devices. The percentage of experimental studies is about 32 % while the studies of CFD is about 21 %, and the combined one is about 47 %.
Since the 1970s, rainwater harvesting has gained more attention, specifically in semi-arid and arid areas. It is essential to take into account how much water can be collected from a single catchment site. Rainfall that has been harvested provides an alternative source of water in the northern region of Iraq. Numerous scholars have developed and executed a range of strategies and guidelines to choose appropriate locations and methods for rainwater harvesting (RWH). However, choosing the optimal method or set of rules for the choice of site is challenging. This study's primary goal was to evaluate previous research regarding the selection of appropriate RWH locations in northern Iraq by assembling a list of the most important techniques and guidelines that evolved over the previous thirty years. The primary factors considered in the process of choosing acceptable locations for RWH were soil type, slope, land use/cover, rainfall, and runoff. A literature review for RWH indicated that these criteria were chosen more frequently and significantly, and the opinions of experts should be used to establish the weight of each criterion. The majority of studies select RHW sites using geographic information systems, hydrological models, and multi-criteria analysis.
The present work aims to build mathematical models based on experimental data to estimate the mechanical properties of submerged arc weldment. AISI 1020 low carbon steel plates 16mm thickness were welded according to orthogonal array in order to establish the relationship between input parameters (welding current, Arc voltage and welding speed) and output parameters (ultimate tensile stress, yield stress, impact energy and hardness) by submerged arc welding (SAW) process. The relationship between input and output parameters for the welding process are conducted using two suitable mathematical models the first one based on regression analysis, while the second one based on multi input single output ANFIS model for estimation of some mechanical properties of the welded plates. It was found that ANFIS results are closer to the experimental results than regression results. The optimal parameters (which give a maximum value of ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield stress and impact energy; 446 MPa, 318 MPa and 213 J) are welding current is (380 Amp), Arc voltage is (25 V) and welding speed is (40 cm/min), while the maximum value of hardness number is (228 HV), when current welding is (380 Amp), Arc voltage is (25 V) and welding speed is (25 cm/min).
In this work, the efficiency of double Gauss quadrature method, used to integrate over a rectangular element in 3D BEM, has been investigated. The efficiency of a quadrature or integration scheme is investigated by estimating the critical ratio for which the absolute relative error of the numerical integration is less than $1\times10^{-6}$. As small as the critical ratio is, the quadrature is more efficient. Also, special transformation techniques have been introduced and used to increase the accuracy and efficiency of double Gauss quadrature especially for near singular cases, where the source point is very close to the element under consideration. Three types of kernels were considered, weak, strong and hyper singular kernels which can be encountered in the integral equation of 3D elastodynamics BEM problems.
In the realm of cryptography, the Substitution-box (S-box) is a critical component for enhancing the security of encryption algorithms. The inherent characteristics of Chaos, such as sensitivity to beginning conditions and unpredictability, make it a highly suitable choice for encryption applications. In this paper, proposed a method for generating S-Boxes using 3D chaotic maps algorithms including (Cat map, Henon map, Sine map, and Cosine map). The primary focus is on enhancing the security and efficiency of cryptographic systems by leveraging the inherent complexity and unpredictability of chaotic maps. The design methodology focuses on achieving high non-linearity, optimal avalanche effect, and Strict Avalanche Criterion ( SAC ), ensuring that minor changes in plaintext result in significant alterations in the ciphertext. Our study presents a detailed analysis of the generated S-Boxes, demonstrating their robustness against common cryptographic attacks. Key findings include significant improvements in nonlinearity, differential uniformity, and bijectivity compared to traditional methods. The test findings and performance analysis indicate that our proposed S-Box exhibits much lower values of Linear Probability ( LP ) and Differential Probability ( DP ), while maintaining a suitable average value of nonlinearity. Additionally, discussed the broader implications of our findings, emphasizing how the proposed method can be employed to produce high-quality analytical results that enhance the security measures of cryptographic applications. This work adds valuable context to existing research and highlights the potential for our model to outperform conventional S-Box generation techniques.
Diagnosing faults in rotary machines is critical, as early fault detection is a precise and essential task in minimizing operational risks and economic losses. Bearings are vital components in rotary machines and are subject to gradual degradation due to continuous operation. Failure to detect early damage can lead to problem escalation, resulting in severe damage and increased costs. In this study, two types of signals from rotary machines are analyzed: acoustic emission (AE) signals and vibration signals. These signals are utilized as input features for a deep learning neural network based on images, where the features are extracted using the Kurtogram, a powerful fourth-order spectral analysis tool that generalizes spectral kurtosis (SK) for a given signal. The results demonstrate that the accuracy of diagnosing the machine’s operational condition whether healthy or faulty ranges from 99.2% to 100%, while the accuracy of fault classification reaches 96.6%. These findings highlight the high efficiency of this methodology in fault detection and classification, establishing it as one of the most important techniques for diagnosing faults in rotary machines.
The aim of this research is to predict the shrinkage defects in Al-Si castings by determination the suitable parameters and techniques which can be applied in casting simulation system. Also, it aims to specify the role of silicon content in amount, morphology, and distribution of these defects. The Numerical solution has been carried out using an explicit 3-D finite difference method for the given system of the casting and a mold. Additionally, an experimental casting of the studied samples was achieved. It was found that the shrinkage porosities increased with increasing the silicon content up to 7%, so at this peak, they spread in alt cast regions and cannot be predicted. The low silicon alloys suffered from only the shrinkage cavities defects that can be predicted by mapping the solidus time contours. Finally, it was concluded that the critical temperature gradient value of the porosities development in the eutectic (AI-12%Si) alloys was 1.3°C/cm.
Bearing fault diagnosis is essential for the maintenance, durability, and reliability of rotating machines. It can minimize economic losses by removing unplanned downtime in the industry due to the failure of rotary machines. In bearing fault detection, developing fault features extraction techniques that can successfully applicable for various fault severity and different operating conditions is still a critical issue. In the current work, the feature extraction technique is a combination between pre-processing algorithms and envelope analysis method. In the pre- processing stage, the autoregressive (AR) model is used to filter the original signal and remove the deterministic vibration sources, as well as maintain the signal representing the condition of the bearing without contaminating noises. Then, the most suitable frequency band is selected based on the spectral kurtosis (SK) analysis. This band contains the signature frequencies of the roller bearing. After that, envelope analysis is employed for detecting faults at different severity. Finally, the features represented the peaks at fundamental fault frequencies are automatically selected from the envelope spectrum. By analyzing all diagnoses results, it is found that the presented method effectively extracts the features at calculated resonance bearing frequencies and proves the significance of the enhancements in a pre-filtering stage in the overall detection performance. Also, it can benefit from these features in the fault classification fields at different speeds because it is independent of speed variation.
This paper is concerned with the application of finite element techniques to the nonlinear analysis of ferrocement slabs. Both material and geometric nonlinearities are considered in the analysis. Concrete compression is modelled by a plasticity model and smeared cracking approach is used for tensile cracking. Degenerated thick shell elements employing a layered discretization through the element are adopted. Analyzing of a ferrocement slab does validation of the proposed model.
Monitoring the health of rotating machinery is essential to ensure system safety, achieve cost savings, and enhance overall reliability. The requirement for a reliable and clear method of identifying defects has prompted the development of several monitoring techniques. They utilize vibration, measurement of the motor's current signature, and acoustic emission data in the process of condition monitoring. The MFS (machinery fault simulator) equipment was used to determine bearing faults using vibration signal analysis. MFS conducts simulations and investigations of many bearing issues, including those occurring in the inner race, outer race, and balls. An accelerometer (type B & K 4366) was connected to a data acquisition device (IDAC-6C) to record vibration signals under different operating conditions. Furthermore, a tachometer equipped with an LCD display is employed to measure the rotational speed. Four types of defects in ball bearing (Koyo 1205C3 type) were studied, the slot in outer race with size 0.196 mm, the slot in inner race with size 0.191 mm, in ball with size 0.196 mm in additional to compound defect. In this paper, spectral correlation technique was employed to detect defects in ball bearings running at varying speed, along with spectral coherence and the corresponding Enhanced Envelope Spectrum (EES) in frequency-order domain and order-order domain. The results show that the adopted methods, that are used to analyze the real vibration signals for diagnosis the defected ball bearings, are suitable, accurate and less processing time for varying speed. The processing time of the FastACP method used to analyze the signals in order- order domain is less than that of the adopted method in the frequency-order domain for any defect type. Overall, using the FastACP method in the order-order domain significantly reduced processing time by approximately 27% compared to the adopted method in the frequency- order domain under varying speed conditions.
An-Najaf Province is one of the most important cities in Iraq and is experiencing rapid population growth and continuous expansion of infrastructure, including residential buildings, hotels, bridges, and commercial centers. This study aims to establish a spatial database of gypsum content in soils across An-Najaf Province, including Najaf city center and Al-Kufa city, to support safe geotechnical design. A total of 464 boreholes and in situ test records were analyzed using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to assess the spatial variability of gypsum content. The adopted methodology comprised four main stages: data collection, georeferencing of geotechnical data, application of interpolation methods, and map generation. Nine geotechnical distribution maps were produced for depths of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 35 m. Results indicated that the 0–4 m depth layer is predominantly moderately gypsiferous, with gypsum content ranging between 10–25%. The 4–8 m depth layer is mainly slightly gypsiferous, with values between 3–10%, while deeper layers from 8 to 35 m are very slightly gypsiferous, with contents ranging from 0.3–3%. These findings show that the near-surface layers (0–4 m) exceed the allowable gypsum content limit of 10%, which may pose potential risks to construction stability, particularly in combination with the high groundwater levels in the Najaf region.
The use of image communication has increased in recent years. In this approach, the encryption process is performed by hiding the processing steps of the wavelet transform. The attacker cannot obtain the original image unless processing steps are known. In this paper, the performance of three different hidden wavelet-based schemes are applied. First, hiding filter types encryption scheme (HFT), second, hiding wavelet packet tree encryption scheme (HWPT), lastly, by combining the previous two methods (HFTWPT). Several experiments are given to illustrate the performance of the proposed schemes.
The rotor unbalances and misalignment in rotary machines are two major sources of vibration. rotor unbalance and misalignment is omnipresent in all rotating machinery widely used in many industrial applications, posing a serious threat to machine life and operation. The present work is an attempt to investigate the vibration characteristics (Amplitude, FFT, and time waveform) of a rotating mechanical system, which has an unbalanced rotor and misalignment. Vibration signals are acquired using an accelerometer mounted on the bearing housing nearer to the rotor. The FFT analysis of the acquired data revealed the response of an unbalanced rotor under operating conditions. Numerical analysis of the system using ANSYS portrayed the modal frequencies and mode shapes. Transient Structural analysis illustrates the response of the system to different mass unbalances. The results revealed that the magnitude of vibration characteristics significantly increases with excitation frequency and exciting force.
This research is devoted to investigate the effect of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strips on the behaviour and load carrying capacity of strengthened and repaired reinforced concrete corbels. Experimental investigation were carried. The experimental program variables include location, direction, amount of CFRP strips and effect of shear span to effective depth (a/d) ratio on the behaviour of strengthened corbels. All corbels had the same dimensions and flexural reinforcement and they were without horizontal shear steel reinforcement. The experimental results obtained from the adopted strengthening and repairing CFRP techniques showed a significant improvement in the behaviour and carrying capacity of the tested corbels. An increase of about (44.5 - 60) % in the ultimate load has been obtained for specimens strengthening by inclined technique compared to the ultimate load of control corbel and (14.7 - 31.2)% for specimens strengthening horizontal technique. For corbels repaired with CFRP strips, an increase of (56%) with respect to the ultimate load of control corbel is achieved. Also the strengthened corbels show stiffer load deflection response than corresponding control corbels (unstrengthened corbels).
Van Kármán vortex street is considered an important phenomenon that accompanies fluid flow, especially when exposed to a certain barrier, as periodic vortexes occur on both sides of the body that rotate in two opposite directions. This phenomenon occurs in the atmosphere around mountains, oceans, seas, and islands. Also, this phenomenon makes it possible to induce a fluid flow around a specific body present in the flow path. In this study, a model for fluid flow around a cylinder of a certain diameter was taken, where the flow near the boundary layers of the cylinder surface moves slower than near the free stream. In addition, the pressure distribution was studied, and it was observed that there is a pressure gradient due to the difference in momentum at the surface of the cylinder in distant areas due to friction. The study area was divided into fine meshes with Fluent software, especially in the irregular areas. The simulation was implemented for Reynolds numbers Re = 100 and Re = 1500 for incompressible flows. Consequently, the equations that do not depend on pressure are difficult to solve. Therefore, methods linking pressure and velocity were adopted, where the pressure-velocity coupling simple method was used. The first-order forward difference scheme was adopted in representing the differential equations as a function of time when performing the simulation. From the steady state and upwards to Reynolds number Re = 100, it was observed that a twain of vortices appeared on the body at a certain speed range. When the state was changed from the stable state to the transitional state, the results changed, as the flow became asymmetric and unsteady due to vortex shedding phenomena, which led to the generation of vortexes in different ways. The U-Velocity curve was studied for two different cases, and the results showed a large discrepancy between the first order and the second order, where the second order had better behavior but required great effort to reach accurate results. Also, pressure-velocity was studied to satisfy mass conservation, and numerical techniques were used to c ompute the equations of Navier-Stokes in CFD, such as SIMPLEC, PISO, and SIMPLE. An acceptable convergence was not reached with the PISO; therefore, the SIMPLE method was adopted. The pressure gradient was drawn around the cylinder, where it was observed that the pressure was greatest at the front of the cylinder and its lowest value at the end.
Zinc and its alloy coatings are commonly used to provide cathodic protection for weathering steel. However, the steel substrate corrodes faster than the Zinc coating because of the coating's negative corrosion potential. Many studies have examined Zinc and alloy coatings' resistance to corrosion. Hot-dip galvanizing, Electrodeposition, and Zinc-rich coat (ZRC) spray are just some of the methods that can be used to deposit such coatings. Commercially available 99.95 % pure Zinc oxide was used in the electroplating process in this investigation. Steel samples were plated in Zinc sulphate and Zinc oxide solutions and were controlled by different bath parameters such as voltage, current, pH, temperature, and coating time. The addition of hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles has also shown significant improvements in corrosion resistance. However, Zinc-based coating techniques reinforced with h-BN incorporation show the best corrosion current density ( I corr ) of Hot dip 2 % wt. (2.1 µA/cm 2 ), ZRC 2.5 % wt., (4.4 µA/cm 2 ), and electroplating 15.75 g/L (0.081 µA/cm 2 ), which is an order of magnitude lower than coatings without h-BNs. The corrosion rates and current densities of Zn/h-BN coated layers were investigated in a controlled laboratory environment that mimicked natural conditions (Rainwater solution) by extrapolating polarization curves.
Mathematical programming techniques have been used to minimize the cost of reinforced concrete counterfort retaining wall. The study presents a formulation based on elastic analysis and the ultimate strength method of design as per ACI-M318code. A computer program is generated to handle the considered problem. The formulation of optimization problem has been made by utilizing the interior penalty function method as an optimization method with the purpose of minimizing the objective function representing the cost of one-meter length of the counterfort retaining wall. This includes cost of concrete, reinforcement, and formwork. The design variables considered in this study are the dimensions and the amounts of reinforcement. It is found that the optimal spacing of counterforts equals about (0.214 to 0.366) of total height of wall. The optimum width of the base is found in the range (0.50 to 0.78) of the total height of the wall. Also the thickness of the stem is in the range(0.0284 to 0.0377) of the total height and it is less than half thickness of the base.
The problem that still exists nowadays with the petrol station is the method of operation because the petrol station is currently operated manually. As it is a time-consuming process that increases manpower, other problems are related to accuracy, gasoline smuggling, fluctuations in global oil prices, sales, database management, environmental pollution and others. Traditional methods of monitoring fuel in petrol station by humans on site are unable to meet the expectations for efficiency, accuracy and cost. Therefore, this paper designs an intelligent system of three filling stations, where the three stations are simultaneously displayed on a single web application, and this IoT-based system is implemented to address all the problems. Mathematical programming techniques have been used to minimize the cost of reinforced concrete T-beam floor. The floor system consists of one way continuous slab and simply supported T-beams. The study presents a formulation based on elastic analysis followed by the ultimate strength method of design with the consideration of serviceability constraints as per ACI Code. The formulation of optimization problem has been made by utilizing the interior penalty function method as an optimization method with the purpose of minimizing the objective function representing the cost of one-meter length of the floor system. The cost includes cost of concrete, reinforcement, and formwork. The design variables considered in this study are the dimensions and the amounts of reinforcement for the slab and beams, in addition to the spacing of the beams. Many examples are solved to show the effect of these design variables on the optimum solution of the floor system. The effect on the optimum design of the compressive strength of concrete, yield strength of steel, concrete cost ratios, and formwork cost ratios has also been studied.
