Alumina-to-Alumina Actively Brazed Using Cu-Ti, Cu-Zr, and Eutectic Ag-Cu-Ti Filler-Metal Alloys

Pages: 150-162

Abstract

Al20rA l10l bronzing systems were produced using a one-stage actively brazed technique based on Cu-Ti, Cu-Zr, and Ag-Cu-Ti alloys. Single and double butt joints were used for micro-structural and mechanical properties studies respectively. The joints that were brazed by using Cu-Zr filler-metal alloys (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% Zr weight percent) have shown low shear strengths at the 2rO2 interface. Higher shear strength was obtained by using Cu-Ti filler-metal alloys (2%, 4%, 6, and 8% Ti weight percent), and eutectic (Ag-26%C u-4% Ti). As judged by the phases Conned at the interface, Cu2 (AlTi)4O is more effective to wet and both alumina to alumina.

Pages: 77-89

Abstract

The aim of this research is to predict the shrinkage defects in Al-Si castings by determination the suitable parameters and techniques which can be applied in casting simulation system. Also, it aims to specify the role of silicon content in amount, morphology, and distribution of these defects. The Numerical solution has been carried out using an explicit 3-D finite difference method for the given system of the casting and a mold. Additionally, an experimental casting of the studied samples was achieved. It was found that the shrinkage porosities increased with increasing the silicon content up to 7%, so at this peak, they spread in alt cast regions and cannot be predicted. The low silicon alloys suffered from only the shrinkage cavities defects that can be predicted by mapping the solidus time contours. Finally, it was concluded that the critical temperature gradient value of the porosities development in the eutectic (AI-12%Si) alloys was 1.3°C/cm.

Abstract

The present work investigates the effects of drinking water on the erosion- corrosion rate and Vickers hardness of (Al-Si) and (Al-Mg-Si). (Al-Si) alloy Which is well-known as casting alloy with high wear resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, good corrosion resistance and improved hardness at a wide range of temperatures While (Al-Mg-Si) alloys have good formability, weld ability, machine ability and corrosion resistance. The alloys specimens which are used for piping and containing water and carbonated water were exposed in erosion- corrosion system in factories by using drinking water type AQUAFINA as exposure media for different exposure time (1-30)h. to measure the erosion-corrosion rate. The results show that there is small different in the rate of corrosion, moreover (Al-Mg-Si) alloy have high resistance to erosion-corrosion in drinking water due to the consisting of (Mg2Si) phase which is precipitate as fine particles due to resist dislocations movement lead to high corrosion strength and the (Al-Si) alloy have high Vickers hardness at natural aging due to the present of high ratio hardening silicon element.

Effect of Ag Nanoparticles Addition on the Microstructure of Cu-21%Zn-6%Al Shape Memory Alloys

Zainab Salim Abd Alhassan, Murtadha Abbas Jabbar

Pages: 42-49

PDF Full Text
Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the effect of Ag nanoparticles addition in different percentages (0.12 wt. %, 0.15 wt. %, 0.25 wt. %, 0.35 wt. %) on the microstructure properties of Cu-21%Zn-6%Al shape memory alloy. Optical and SEM were carried out to studied such effects. Two heat treatments were carried out at (825 ℃ and 850 ℃) for 10 min and quenched in ice water. It was observed that both of heat treatment lead to formation M18R martensite with V-shape and needle like, but raising the temperature of heat treatment from 825 ℃ to 850 ℃ lead to a decrease formation α phase, which leads to improving the shape memory properties. Refinement of the grain size resulted as Ag nanoparticles addition increased from 0 to 0.25 wt. %, the grain size decreases from 1551 μm to 212 μm with reduction of 86.32 wt. % at 0.25 wt. % Ag. The microstructure observation indicated that the Ag nanoparticles addition leads to creating a multi-variant oriented martensite microstructure after quenching process in ice water.

Production of Al-Mg alloy Ribbons by Using Single Roller Wheel Melt Spinning as a Non-Conventional Forming Technology.

Ahmad. K. Jassim, similar technology used to produce near-net shaper thin, Ali S. Hammood

Pages: 155-161

PDF Full Text
Abstract

Single roll melt spinning is a non-conventional forming process used to produce rapidly solidified thin ribbons as a near net shaper by direct casting from liquid state. In this paper, single roll made from brass with a diameter of 150 mm was used to produce rapidly solidified Al-Mg alloys ribbons. The ribbons are produced with thickness in the range of 20 to 330 µm. The results exhibited unique advantages in refining the microstructure, and modifying the mechanical properties of these ribbons. The hardness was improved to about twice the original hardness of alloy. Moreover, corrosion resistance of alloy was improved and their rate was redcued from 10.02 to 1.643 mpy for alloy type 5052 and from 6.91 to 1.943 mpy for 5083.

Artificial Neural Network Prediction Model for Impact Energy of Thermal Aged Cast Stainless Steel

Haider M. Mohammed

Pages: 82-88

PDF Full Text
Abstract

Impact energy prediction of thermal aged cast stainless steel from impact test was studied using artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. Impact energy data for specimens from eleven cast stainless steel alloys at different aging times and temperatures, were used to evaluate possible artificial neural network architecture for prediction impact energy. These data are taken from Argonne National Laboratories (ANL) in USA that involved impact test results of cast stainless steel after aging between 200 and 400oC for up to 30000 hour. The ANN model exhibited excellent comparison with experimental results of ANL i.e. correlation coefficient (R=0.9451) and mean square error (MSE=1.2*10-5). Since a large number of variables were used during training the ANN model, a reliable and useful predictor for impact energy in thermal aged cast stainless steel was provided.

Effect of Fabrication Method and Heat Treatment on the Properties of Co-Cr Bio Alloy

Zahraa A. Hanoon, Adnan S. Jabur

Pages: 45-49

PDF Full Text
Abstract

Co-Cr alloys are widely used in dental and medical equipment since the development of the first cast Co-Cr-Mo alloy. This is due to its high mechanical properties and high resistance to wear and corrosion. This research aims to study the effect of the fabrication method (Investment Casting and Selective Laser Melting SLM by 3D printing) and heat treatments on the mechanical and tribological properties of Co-Cr-Mo alloy. It was found that the Selective Laser Melting method in general increases the ultimate tensile strength, strain and hardness compared to the Investment Casting method. Also, solution treatment and aging reduce the strength and strain values of the SLM samples and have no obvious effect on the casting samples. The wear test shows that wear rate of casting samples is lower than that of SLM samples.
